The Importance of Being Active

Why is it important to maintain an active lifestyle . . . simply, exercise is medicine.
Not only can it help reverse, and improve, several deprived health conditions, it can help you avoid a magnitude of diseases. In fact, physical inactivity in itself is the fourth leading cause of mortality in the world, and is the main cause of breast and colon cancers, accounting for almost 25% of them. Avoiding physical activity weakens your immune system, increases your risk of diabetes, ischemic heart diseases, cancers, strokes, insomnia, depression and anxiety. It’s tough to find anything in your body that isn’t positively affected by some form of physical activity.
Too often we associate physical activity as sport... but it doesn’t have to be. Health organizations recommend just a minimum of 150 minutes moderate physical activity per week, and only a few (aka. two) days of resistance exercise or activities, to notice significant health benefits. Shockingly, only 1 in 5 Americans meet these recommended guidelines. How is this possible!? Do we not have the time, or the money to invest in our bodies? Of course we do, because at the end of the day, if we don’t spend the money, or take the time to be active... than time and money will be taken from us... and eventually, it could cost you your life.
Physical activity and an active lifestyle not only let’s you live longer, it lets you live richer by enhancing your life. Exercise boosts energy, and improves your mood. It combats decreases in bone and muscle mass, giving you the capacity to accomplish more in life, especially as you get older. Exercise promotes sleep by letting you fall asleep faster and deeper, and it can help put a spark in your sex life, with increases in arousal for women, and helping to prevent some, er… dysfunction problems in men. Not to mention, the increase in activity will keep you toned, and have you looking fit!
